Referrals

Berrien County uses the referral process for testing. To be eligible for gifted education services, a student must qualify through a multiple-criteria assessment process by meeting the criteria in any three of the following four areas: mental ability, achievement, creativity, and motivation.

1. Mental ability: A student must score at or above the 96th percentile on a norm-referenced mental ability test in grades 3-12 or the 99th percentile in grades K-2.
2. Achievement: A student must score at or above the 90th percentile on the total battery, total math, or total reading on a norm-referenced achievement test.
3. Creativity: A student must score at or above the 90th percentile the the total battery score of a norm-referenced creativity test.
4. Motivation: A student must score at or above the 90th percentile on a standardized motivational characteristics rating scale. For grades 6-12, a GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale may be used.
